The Telephone and the Post-Office

The telephone saves much time by enabling people to talk to one another over great distances. If you want to telephone fr om a public phone you drop money in the slot, pick up the receiver and dial the number. If the number you need is engaged you hear a frequent high tone buzzing. If it is free the person whom you are calling answers.

If you want to buy stamps, send letters, parcels, telegrams or money orders, you go to the post-office. When you want to send a letter, you must write the address on the envelope and stick the required stamps on it. But it is not necessary to go to a post-office to post it. In all cities and towns there are post-boxes. Regular letters may be dropped in any of these post-boxes. To send a postcard you don't need an envelope. .

Most packages called parcels are sent by railway. Parcels' postage depends upon the weight and the distance they must be sent.

Money orders can be sent by post or by telegraph. The telegraph money orders reach the addressee much quicker.

Everybody praises the catalogue of the reading-room there. There are many halls to be visited there and in each there is a special collection of rare and valuable objects. The British Museum is known to be wonderful place indeed.
